MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Opium poppy is an annual herb up to 1 m high. It has large impressive flowers appearing from April to May. It usually grows on disturbed places along the Troodos and Pentadaktylos ranges from 200 to 1200 m. This subspecies is closely related to the cultivated Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum subsp. somniferum).
Australia, Turkey and India are the major producers of poppy for medicinal purposes and poppy-based drugs, such as morphine or codeine. The USA has a policy of sourcing 80% of its narcotic raw materials from the traditional producers, India and Turkey. Poppy has been used against toothaches and coughs.
