Spade Flower is a herbaceous evergreen that reaches up to 60 cm high, glabrous or hairy. The leaves are linear to lanceolate, 5.1 cm long, margins recurved to revolute, sometimes flat with estípulas acuminadas, 1-4 mm long. The flowers are solitary, sepals 3-4 mm long. The lower petal wide spatula, the upper petals linear-oblong, 3-4 mm long, the lateral pair of 4.5-5 mm long. The fruit is a capsule 4-9 mm long, with 5-12 seeds.
Spade Flower is considered to possess diuretic and demulcent properties. Decoction or powder of the whole plant taken to improve memory, vitality and as a remedy in consumption, asthma, fever and leprosy. Shampoo made from this plant removes dandruff. Whole plant is used to cure affections of urinary organs, tuberculosis, asthma, fever, leprosy and eye diseases. It is also aphrodisiac. The plant is reported to possess tonic, diuretic and demulcent properties.
