MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
A hands some branched annual herb, 60-150cm in height with a few scattered stellate hairs, growing in marshy and wet places; leaves lanceolate, serrate or crenate serrate, one nerved; flowers pink or red solitary or in pairs on short peduncles opening at noon and closing at the following dawn; fruits subglobose capsules, seeds subglobose dotted.
The roots are astringent, mildly thermogenic, constipating and febrifuge, are useful in fever, diarrhoea, burning sensation, vitiated conditions of vata and pitta. The fruits are mucilaginous and useful in gastropathy, fever and vitiated conditions of vata and pitta.
