MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Malataghi is a plant that grows in Amazon tropical rain forest. It is also called as Midwife's herb as it is the traditional medicine for treating problems of female reproductive system. This perennial shrub grows up to a height of 3-5 meters. It bears broad round leathery leaves with prominent veins, green unisexual flowers. The male flowers form small umbels and female flowers grow on spikes. Fruits are red or orange coloured hairy drupes covered by bracts. It is a native of Mexico, and grows in America and South East Asia.
An extract and decoction made from Velvet leaf are used to treat problems related to female reproductive system. It maintains hormonal balance, prevents miscarriage, eases child birth, and reduces problems of menstruation, excessive bleeding and uterine hemorrhage in females. It is anti-microbial, expectorant, and beneficial for fever, diarrhea, dysentery, indigestion, malaria, hematuria, lung diseases, piles, ulcers and skin infections. A decoction made from the leaf and stem is analgesic. It reduces pain and inflammation. A decoction of the vine is helpful in cough, kidney stones, muscle cramps and arthritis. It is used externally to treat cuts, wounds, ulcers and other skin infections.
