Family: Viperidae
Genus: Hypnale
Binomial name : Hypnale hypnale (Merrem, 1820)
Hump nosed pit viper is one of the poisonous snakes in Kerala. Scientifically it is named as Hypnale hypnale. It belongs to the family of Vipers (Viperade). This snake makes its appearance in South India usually after a rainfall. This variety of snake usually moves around at night. The bite of this snake can result in swelling and pain. At times bubbles may also appear on the bitten area. The poison from this snake may not result in the death of the patient. But in my experience I have observed that 20 percentages of the victims of this snake have been tested positive for the poison of the snake in their blood (5-24 hrs). Following which the Creatine level would increase in the blood of the victim. Lack of appetite, vomiting and an increase in the temperature would be experienced by the victims. In children the poison of this snake may result in dangerous consequences. The victim of this snake bite should be immediately sent to a good physician. The treatment for this may last for 10 days.
